- October 23, 2009 - The Board of Directors Network (BDN) is pleased to announce it has named Carol B. Tomé as the 2009 Lettie Pate Whitehead Evans Award recipient. Tomé, Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President of Corporate Services at The Home Depot, was presented with the award last night at BDN’s Annual Study Dinner at the Hotel Palomar in Atlanta. Now in its seventh year, the Lettie Pate Whitehead Evans Award, sponsored by KPMG LLP, recognizes women who have made outstanding corporate contributions at the board level, in their communities, and in helping other women achieve their full potential in the business world.
“Carol Tomé epitomizes the essence of the Lettie Pate Whitehead Evans Award,” said Miriam Burgess, President of BDN. “Her presence as a board member on such prestigious boards as UPS makes her a role model for other women. The contribution she has made in the business world through her effective leadership and her remarkable commitment to helping other women obtain board positions is highly commendable.”
The award is presented annually in honor of Lettie Pate Whitehead Evans, one of the first women to serve as a director of a major American corporation. She was appointed to the board of directors of The Coca-Cola Company in 1934 and held this position for nearly 20 years.
Tomé serves on the board of directors of UPS, a role she was appointed to in 2003, and serves as the chair of the organization’s audit committee. In 2007, she was named to the board of directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, and in 2009 she was named Chairman of the nine-member board for 2010. She recently served as the chair of the advisory board for the Metropolitan Atlanta Arts Fund and is a current member of the Atlanta Botanical Garden board of directors and the Committee of 200.
As CFO and Executive Vice President of Corporate Services at The Home Depot, Tomé leads real estate, financial services, store construction, and strategic business development and growth initiatives. Additionally, she oversees the company’s financial reporting, planning and analysis as well as its financial operations, divisional finance, internal audit and corporate compliance, investor relations, treasury and tax.
Prior to joining The Home Depot in 1995, Tomé was Vice President and Treasurer of Riverwood International Corporation. She began her career as a commercial lender with United Bank of Denver, now Wells Fargo, and spent several years as Director of Banking for Johns-Manville Corporation.
In 2008 Tomé ranked 16 on Forbes’ “World’s 100 Most Powerful Women” list and in 2007 she was named to The Wall Street Journal’s “50 Women To Watch” list.
Tomé holds a Master of Business Administration in Finance from the University of Denver and a bachelor’s degree in communication from the University of Wyoming.
