The BDN Lettie Pate Whitehead Evans Award is designed to highlight the contributions women bring to the corporate boardroom as board members and as advocates for women in business. These women are role models to those who aspire to executive leadership positions and as future board members.
Lettie Pate Whitehead Evans was one of the first women to serve as a director of a major American corporation. In 1934, she was appointed to the Board of Directors of The Coca-Cola Company, a position she held for nearly 20 years.
The recipient of the award will be a woman who has attained excellence in her profession allowing her to have the skills and experience to become a corporate board member. This award is for women who are currently serving on a Georgia-based corporate, private or public, for profit board (1+ year serving time required) or Georgia residents serving on an out-of-state corporate board(s). Because all of our final nominees will have achieved similar levels of career excellence, the distinguishing criteria will be:
- How she is recognized as an outstanding board member through her contributions to good corporate governance; and
- Her active role as an advocate, as demonstrated through her actions and impact on other women, for BDN’s mission of increasing the number of women in executive suites and on corporate boards.
Recipient must be present at the annual board study reception, dinner event and award ceremony in order to qualify.
Since the first presentation in 2003, this special award has been underwritten by one of our corporate sponsors, KPMG LLP.
ABOUT THE SELECTION PROCESS
The process begins in the early summer of each year with a call for nominations to BDN members, BDN friends and members of the business community. After the stated deadline for nomination packages, a panel of judges selected from BDN leadership and the business community will choose the year's recipient. The award is announced and presented at the fall gala dinner.
